History:

In 2006, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Community Action for a Renewed Environment (C.A.R.E.) grant was awarded to a local environmental group on behalf of the Pueblo C.A.R.E. Project.

The EPA initiated the C.A.R.E. Program in 2005 by endowing 12 eligible communities across the country, including the Healthy Air for Northeast Denver (HAND) Partnership in Denver, Colo., with the first of a two-stage collaborative grant.

The program goal is to create self-sustaining organizations with the ability to both look at and address environmental problems at the local level. The EPA hopes to do this by offering both federal funding and technical support and encouraging sustainability.
